Egyptian capital deploys bespoke traffic management system
The Egyptian capital, Cairo, the largest city in the Middle East and the 13th largest metropolitan area in the world, has deployed a new custom-made advanced traffic management system to improve a transportation network that serves the economic and motoring needs of more than 22 million people.
Based on a competitive bid process, Texas-based Trafficware’s ATMS.now central management system and its controllers and cabinets were selected for installation on more than 230 of the busiest intersections across the city. The company’s SynchroGreen adaptive traffic management system was also selected for deployment on 100 of the city’s critical traffic arteries. The multimillion dollar project is part of Cairo’s extensive infrastructure initiative to ensure economic growth across the metropolitan region, which previously did not have any type of traffic signal network in place.
Trafficware worked with the city and SensorTec, the project’s subcontractor, to design a traffic control cabinet that met Cairo’s unique needs, including voltage, traffic volumes, interoperability with other traffic systems.
It must also be able to operate in extreme environmental conditions, that include average summer temperature of 34.7 degrees C (94.5F) – as well as record highs of 47C and lows of 1C – frequent wind storms that bring Sharan dust into the city, and sudden flash flooding. To meet Cairo’s exacting demands for product delivery, Trafficware mobilized a team and ran double manufacturing shifts throughout the summer in its Sugar Land manufacturing facility. Following completion of the project, SensorTec has now become Trafficware’s partner in the region.
“The City of Cairo aims to build a world-class traffic management system from the ground up, commented Bassem Khalil, president of SensorTec. "During the selection process, the team looked throughout the world for partners that would meet the demands of the city. We were impressed by the levels of innovation and quality from Trafficware’s products and their strong commitment to the success of their customer.”
